I, too, like the janitor idea. I think it is a really fun concept and really original!

I love the newsboy cap on the thumbnail lower down as well. Maybe the janitor was a "newsboy fairy" in the 20's and has kept the hat all these years, haha.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Janitor seems to have potential so I dashed off a couple of early revisions.

Why is he cleaning up ink? Maybe he's like the tooth fairy and collects it?

Why does Ellie think today is the day to get a photo? Maybe she dumped it out to attract him?

Julia's idea of other fairies made me think of naughty/punk fairies from his fairy world. Maybe they vandalize Ellie's art table for him and the janitor has to clean up after them?

Or maybe Ellie's cat is always making a mess and attracting the ink fairy?

Trying to settle on a coherent idea that will read correctly in a single image. Probably be in this revision stage for a few days. These still feel like a bit of a stretch concept-wise.

@JoshuaDages Thanks! I'm adding a janitor hat at least. Will play around with the details of his costume.

@Chris-Philpot thanks so much. I’m just getting started with illustration. I’m coming from an oil painting background so it’s really tough to shift gears. I think illustration is much harder than fine arts. Designing characters is so hard.

I love the janitor with no hat.

@kimmypie Yeah, I know what you mean. My comfort zone is editorial illustration so it's humbling learning all the basics again in this world. At least we know it gets easier.

@Chris-Philpot I like both of these but I think the cat concept has more of an obvious tie in with the prompt. Love the poor little janitor 😆

New study with some line work and values. Testing having Ellie in the background.

@Chris-Philpot This version really brings it all together to fully fit the prompt. Love that he's trying to mark out her declaration lol!

@Elliot Thanks, encouraging to hear you read it as intended. Really appreciate the validation on that bit. The narrative part is my weakest muscle so I'm focusing on it more this month. Thanks again!

@Chris-Philpot I like where these concepts are all going but I'm curious as to whether Ellie is a diary too or if the janitor is human sized, due to their similarities in size

@Gary-Wilkinson Ah yes, GREAT point. This is an interesting perspective problem. If you put something tiny (fairy) in the foreground and something relatively large (human girl) in the background, the sizes can become quite vague. I assume I'll need some props to clarify this. I hope to make the fairy small in absolute size but dominant in the composition. I suppose I could also resort to showing the fairy through the viewfinder of the camera and avoiding showing Ellie altogether. Thanks for the insight!

Worked up more finished options. I'm wondering if it's stronger with Ellie shown holding the camera? Or if a simpler version viewed through the camera viewfinder would be more effective? Too close to it now to tell.
