SCBWI Narrative Art Award- Critiques wanted
-
@MirkaH Hi! Thank you so much for your input.
They are cute pieces, but the theme for this year is silver lining. The definition pulled from search result: Use the term silver lining when you want to emphasize the hopeful side of a situation that might seem gloomy on the surface. The common expression "every cloud has a silver lining" means that even the worst events or situations have some positive aspect.
To be honest with you, I completely fogot about the theme.
i chose this story purely because I just felt like it. I’ve been meaning to revise the story a bit to better convey the narrative I have in my mind. Hopefully this 2nd version will represent silver lining more.
Ultimately though, I really don’t care If it disqualifies me or if I don’t win. The main reason I joined this contest is so that I’ll have Black and White pieces in my portfolio. My only wish for this project is that I get exposure.
Yup, if anyone’s going to pay me nothing but exposure, it’s going to be me.
The series of illustrations don't seem to fit in with the given assignment. I would rethink and try to come up with something that goes a bit more humorous, or grave. That would be my immediate reaction to what you have come up with. But if you want to stick with what you have, they are really cute illustrations.
It would be nice if I could do it all over again and fix all the flaws but the deadline is tomorrow. There was about 3 days left when you made this post. Unfortunately, There’s literally no time left.
I think that there is a huge difference in how the two girls looking in through the pastry window are rendered. The top one that is a bit more sketchy feels more appropriate for a middle grade book, than the bottom one. The bottom one is more cute, like what you would see in a picture book category. So if you are going for middle grade, is it possible to draw all the folks to fit the sketch of the girl on the top?
It would be fun to explore a sketchy style in the future. But maybe not in this project. Like I said, we have no time left.

@Nyrryl-Cadiz I really love these, Nyrryl.

@Nyrryl-Cadiz These turned out really nice. I can't decided whether I like your first attempt at the first scene the best or the later one, but did you an amazing job. Good luck with the contest!!
I have never been a member of SCBWI before, but would you recommend it even if i'm not in an area where there are any local chapters? I like the idea of taking part in these contests, and it sounds like some people found agents or other work through SCBWI.

@ambiirae @K-Flagg @KathrynAdebayo @Gary-Wilkinson Thank you, everyone!
@K-Flagg thanks! I simplified my rendering just to finish in time.
-
Hi, everyone! I just sent in the illustrations. It's out of our hands now. On to the next project! Thank you so much for all the help. I appreciate all of your inputs!
-
@Gary-Wilkinson Thank you! If you're interested in joining, I say go for it. They cost $100 per year if you're from a developed country and $50 if you come from a developing one. If you become a member, you can join in all of their contests. One of our fellow artist here in the forum @Neha-Rawat joined the last scbwi portfolio competition and won first place! Even if you don't win, joining and being seen by publishers and agents is always a good thing. Plus, they also have a bunch of talks and seminars about the illustration business. Though, I've never participated in one because of my schedule, they're always a good resource. I highly recommend signing up.

@Nyrryl-Cadiz this turned out GORGEOUS! I like your changes, the first story showed determination and success, and the second one is more complex and really sweet. It punched my feelings in a good way. The values and compositions are WORKING IT!
