Usually when I do line and wash, I do the line first and the wash second but I've been experimenting with doing "wash and line" where I put the blocks of colors and shading on the paper first and then draw in the line afterward. I'm not sure the end results are that much different but so far I find it keeps me looser and is less nerve-wracking for me. Because I'm more comfortable with line than with color, when I do the line first, I find myself thinking, "I hope I don't wreck this when I add watercolor," but when I do the watercolor first, I find myself thinking, "It looks terrible but I can make it look better when I add the line," so I'm not as tense during the painting part.

Anyway, this is a wash and line sketch of a townhouse in Brooklyn where I visited my son this past weekend.

Been thinking about getting into pet portraits to get some more commission work. Here’s my first go at one BA576206-FF4D-480E-88C8-7D39A5BC0758.jpeg

@Griffin This is stunning. I especially love the lighting and the dog's eyes -- such expression in them.

Finally kicked off a big personal project that I've been planning for awhile, in which I'm going to be creating character designs, illustrations, and sculptures focused on The Lord of the Rings over the coming year. My goal is two fold: to work on a project for a longer time period than I've ever been able to give before, and to create a work-life balance and routine that will allow give me the structure needed to jump onto big original projects once the Year of the Ring has ended.

I felt like my take on Gandalf would be the perfect place to start.

@skillydan that is seriously awesome! Was the original sketch done by your child? Such a brilliant idea!

@Kristen-Lango as @AngelinaKizz said its an art challenge on Instagram. Each week there is a new kid's drawing of a monster and artists redraw it in their own style. Very fun and easy to get involved 🙂
