Anyone planning to do Inktober this year?
-
Yep. I'm aiming to but damn is it intimidating. I don't usually draw on paper anymore after moving to digital so rusty doesn't even cover it. Hopefully I'll make the full month before my pride is crushed.
-
@LongJeff I hear ya! lol
Spending these next few weeks doing the inking practice exercises in Jake's "how to Ink" video trying to limber up. -
I'm going to go for it, I've already tried brainstorming for it. Thought I'm probably not going to agonize over it as much as I do other pieces. Gonna try and keep it fun.
-
@longjeff Analog inking has no "undo" button! But it can build confidence in your work so I think it's worth a shot even if you feel rusty. My goal is to be "braver with black" and fill in big shadow areas and dark-colored objects instead of just drawing the outlines. It could fail spectacularly!
-
@carriecopa I love that! Failing spectacularly, because at least it will be spectacular.
-
I'll definitely do some of it. My wife and I are expecting our third child the beginning of November so I anticipate being even more cramped for time. I thought of lumping together a week's worth into a single illustration and posting weekly. Then I saw the comment of working small and now I wonder if I should use that as a daily character design/spot illustration exercise instead.

@jon-anderson congrats on the new soon to be new addition to the family!
-
@jon-anderson Congrats on the new baby! We have a new granddaughter (6 months now) and she is lighting up our world

@Chip-Valecek & @MissMushy Thank you! They are indeed a treasure from God.

Man, I almost forgot what happened Inktober 2017.
So, I got super fired up last year - did my first drawing......and was promptly decimated by the flu. Quarantined myself in the home office for a week and a half (didn't want to get the fam sick).
Sounds ideal for drawing though, right?
Could have been except I basically had to lay flat the whole week, or insta-headache and other things. No joke, it sucked.
So this year...perhaps that won't happen. haha. XD
-
@adc
hopefully it wonโt be the same this year for you.
-
@lollyw You can do it!!
-
yep! just need to find ideas for the prompts...preferably a theme.
-
I will deffo be doing it. Last year was the first time I've ever completed it and it was so fulfilling! I actually did inktober and Drawlloween at the same time so I was making myself do 2 drawings a day for the whole month. This year ill just be doing inktober. I would recommend it. It helped me grow my art style and I gained alot of new followers plus I found some new amazing artists to follow!
-
So pumped hearing so many people here are doing inktober!
This will be my third attempt at completing inktober... hopefully third time's a charm lol.Things I'm doing to prepare:
- Practicing waking up early (5:45am) to give myself an hour of distraction free drawing time in the morning
- Coming up with a theme in addition to the prompts (maybe people and pets? Or girls and flowers?)
- Have my supplies ready
I might be doing my version of inktober this year and include watercolor, but I'm not sure yet
Best of luck to everyone!
-
Indeed. I haven't done it at all in years past, but would love to jump in this year. Hopefully this community can help motivate and keep us going! I know showing up every single day can be so hard, but worth it.
@lady-chamomile I like your list of preparations, good solid ideas to help get past the resistance!
If anyone has any tips on getting through it, I'd love to hear them.
-
@robgale oooooh! Glad it's helpful ^_^
I've also heard making extra drawings whenever possible would help if some unforeseen occurrence prevents you from doing that day's drawing... but I don't know if people would consider that cheating lol.
-
@lady-chamomile I will totally be cheating!
-
OMG guys! I saw the coolest inked horse with gold accents on Drawing wiff Waffles' youtube channel. I'll be incorporating gold ink for sure! Here's the one I'm getting -> https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0069EYIYA/ref=ox_sc_mini_detail?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2IWCJ0AJPPRJZ

Sooo how's the sketching/practice going? I have been trying to do some brainstorming using the prompt list as a starting point while also thinking about a common theme to work on. Themes under consideration : wacky pets ( gives me chance to practice drawing animals inspired by prompts), Myth or fairytales (might be good for future children's book portfolio pieces),
Drawing in style of (to help me incorporate learning from others techniques)
I am finding generating ideas based on the the prompt list challenging though but it could just be me.
