@djly I think you have a good point and it would certainly help the perspective. I struggled to get the water to look like water so I don’t know how well I can define it more but I’ll give it a shot.

@demotlj This is adorable, and yes definitely serene! I really love the feeling it evokes, I feel calm just looking at it.

One more. (It's my day off today and I have a busy week coming up so I'm trying to get this done.)

I added ripples, tweaked a few things, brightened the stars, and added text. Questions:

          1. Did I overdo the stars?

          2. Instead of having the text on the picture itself, I could add a white frame (as if it were on a larger page) and put the caption underneath. The text is important for the story but might detract from the overall feel. Thoughts?

@demotlj I think the stars are good. For the text, what if you made it white? It might pop more off the page. I think it works nicely in the place you have it.

I think your general shapes and values and composition are working well. Really, all I think that needs doing from here is nailing your details. I'm seeing a lot of soft airbrushed texture going on, I'd love to see you get a bit braver with a harder edged brush.

@Sarah-LuAnn Edges have been a struggle for me in all of my painting. I'm not really even sure how to get harder edges or frankly, where they should be. For example, when you say, "nailing your details," what details are missing? Fur, ripples? I feel tone deaf here!

@demotlj This is gorgeous! Love the expressions on their faces. As for details, I think maybe the fur colors (not lines) could be less fuzzy, but it does match the water the way you have it. Thanks for sharing your process!

@yeungtina @Sarah-LuAnn I'll go back and watch the SVS video on painting fur and hair again. I feel often as if my problem lies not in painting but in being able to see the details in the first place. Sometimes it hurts my brain! 🙂

@demotlj This is really looking great! had a couple of things for feedback - did a quick cut and paste/draw over to give an idea of what i am thinking - the main thing is maybe bring the two main characters up into the frame a bit more? Also add a bit of overlap with background elements to give a bit of foreground/middle ground - i tried more dramatic light and dark for night time lighting - i'm thinking it might be working , not sure though - added moonlight highlights on the background sea otters to see how it might look.....but mainly was thinking that bringing the two main otters up a bit might be good 🙂

@demotlj this is really coming together nicely! The slight changes you made in the water really help with the perspective/depth. I like the paint over that @Kevin-Longueil created - bringing some more depth to the painting.

Thanks to a convenient snowstorm, my evening meeting was canceled and I had a chance to work on this a little more. This will have to be the final piece because I won’t have time to work on it any more. I’ll replace my handwritten text with a typed font tomorrow and post it to the contest. Thanks for everyone’s help.
