I have been lurking (and learning) on SVS for awhile now and meaning to get around to introducing myself. Finally, tonight I have arrived at the critical moment when I either clean my studio or introduce myself on the forum.

      So hereโ€™s my introduction:
I've never had a chance to attend a formal illustration program, but I've been a compulsive doodler for roughly four decades now. The last decade of which I spent building a school here in South Korea. Part of running the school was doing illustrations for in house publications and developing a cartooning program for the kids.

In September of last year, my wife and I sold our school and set out on the Camino de Santiago in Spain to find our new direction in life. After a thousand kilometer walk and some time thinking in Italy. I became clear on two things. First, my new direction is to tell stories with my art. Second, I have a lot to learn about telling stories with art. And so, after a few months spent reinventing the wheel, I washed up on these shores here at SVS.

I'm looking for a tribe. A group of the kind of people that maybe I would have met in a university program had life taken a different turn. I'm looking to connect with people jousting at the same sorts of windmills and maybe take the same sorts of courses on SVS together.

As for where I am in the process, here are a couple of recent projects I've been working on:

@sketchbook Welcome to the forum. Finding a tribe is so important and while SVS courses are great and full of valuable information, it's even nicer to have people to share them with, and to share that common goal of story telling. I admit, however, that I am really jealous of your thousand kilometer walk. It must have been a great experience.

@Heather-Boyd Thanks for the warm welcome and for your observations on the Dino-biker. I'm enjoying experimenting with gouache. The textures really add an extra dimension to a painting. Itโ€™s been pretty hit or miss, but I'm getting a few more hits these days.

@demotlj that is for the welcome. The Camino is one of the best things Iโ€™ve ever done. It is a unique experience in terms of world travel. It's one of the few 'vacation' destinations that is guaranteed to be difficult, uncomfortable and challenging, yet every year more pilgrims set out on the path. If you ever decide to go, let me know, Iโ€™d be happy to bore you to tears with observations and advice.

@nyrrylcadiz That's the big plan for the next couple of months, to try to pull together a strong portfolio. I've been drawing, sketching and doodling all my life but putting together a good professional portfolio of finished pieces is something I have never done.

I love your art, it is very good! You'll build a pro portfolio in no time.

I think you could not find a better place than here, it is a very welcoming place to find like-minded people showing constant support.
I came for the very same reason.

Also, I walked the Way from Burgundy some years ago. Nice to meet a fellow pilgrim here ๐Ÿ™‚

The Camino from Burgundy must be amazing. I would love to have a chance to walk through France. It must be so beautiful. So happy to find another pilgrim here. Buen Camino!
