"High Cotton, 'ol times there are not forgotten."

Living in "high cotton" meant times were good. The crops were high and there would be a good harvest. There is a song by Alabama called "High Cotton." It speaks of a family who didn't have much, but as kids they didn't know. They had a happy life with a home filled with love. When I think of my own childhood and those beautiful cotton fields I felt the same way. We had a modest life growing up. Each summer we would pile in the family van and travel down to Alabama. To a place that felt like home even though I never lived there. My Papaw, aunts and uncles and all my cousins lived there. Oh how I loved them and longed to be with our family every time I had to leave. Time has passed and those visits are far and few between, but those times will never be forgotten. This cotton collection is an homage to the family and a land I love so dear! cotton collection .jpg

Skyscrapers in Hong Kong are built with holes in them so dragons can pass through! 🐉

@Stacey-Lynn-Schleich I love the story of this image. I would pay more attention to Skycrapers if I get a chance to visit Hong Kong again in the future.

@Su thank you. I had been doodling thumbnails for "superstition" ever since the topic was announced, but never arrived in a concept I am happy with. I found it so hard to find a believe which is intrigging to me and very visual at the same time. I painted this piece the last moment, glad you liked it :-).

Hi! Im a brand new svslearn student and this is my first time posting to the forum. I had some technical newbie challenges learning how to post, and getting my account set up. Now I know to check all the tech stuff twice a few days before a contest deadline instead of 30 minutes!

Even if I’m not eligible for the contest, I’d so much appreciate any feedback about my illustration. The part I found most challenging and an area I wish to grow in is character faces and expression.

Doing this illustration and finishing it gave me such a confidence boost that I can start my journey to become an illustrator. I haven’t made art in many years, although I went to art school about 15 years ago, I let life get in the way of my artistic dreams.

The superstition I chose to draw is from India. Legend says that if you walk under a tree wearing perfume, ghosts will follow you home. These ghosts are women with backwards feet, no mouths and really tragic back stories. I chose to play up their witchy-ness to make them more kid friendly. I was inspired by Indian prints and miniatures paintings for the ornamentation, colors, and style. I’m also a big fan of German woodcuts. I used Procreate on my iPad to make it, and had so much fun getting to learn this program, and working digitally in general.
