@xin-li ive inked like this.. with a sumi pen as well. It was a fun ink only live figure drawing class.

Also everyone's is doing so well! I love the hatching especially @BichonBistro

@demotlj the curved lines are awful!! I did so many of them the first time around and still couldnt get it right half the time. Still have trouble with them. I read this other book on inking that said one technique that works for some people is drawing the line with pencil first, and it's ok to do it in multiple strokes but you have to practice attaching the lines so it looks like 1 line.

@Geoffrey-Anderson i can tell you're having lots of fun 😛 love the line variation part especially.

@chrisaakins i actually cant do this as well digitally.. it looks better at the end cause of undo! maybe its cause i put more pressure on myself when i do it traditionally.. who knows. good work!

@demotlj ive used a white out pen, ive used "dr ph martin's bleed proof white" it's pretty like paint, and it's ok to go over it again but ONLY with brush or marker maybe after it fully dries (pen will scratch it off) some people if they ruined a comic panel really badly or something spilled on the panel lets say, one technique is to redraw on a separate paper, cut out the bad one from the page and stick the good one to the page.
I've also used "super white" which is a japanese brand but if you dont use it the jar dries up completely and you have to throw it out. My favorite has been Dr Ph Martin's Bleed Proof White because it doesn't dry up, you just use a drop of water and it's fine again.

@demotlj hehe. I actually just used the good old pental brush pen with this practice. Also the princicle is still the same as Jake mentioned in the inking video: use shoulder and elbow movement for long strokens, and wrist movement for short strokes.

A calm way of starting my work day today. Today's practice is done with technical pen and sumi brush (my pental brush ran out of ink, and you probably can spot out when I switched the brush 😄

I found it is much harder to get consistent line weight with sumi brushes, especially with curves.

@xin-li your lines look very expressive and beautiful even so. Good job.

@xin-li these are so beautiful—puts me in a trance-like state: I tried your idea of inking from stand with tip just barely touching paper—not as wobbly results as I was expecting!

@chrisaakins I’m doing digital too! I’m so glad someone else is! I was afraid everyone was gonna be perturbed that I’m not using traditional ink!

Everyone’s work is looking great! I’m a bit late to that party as today was my first opportunity to sit down and watch the class. I’m going the digital route as I’m trying to learn it as my new main medium. What do you think of my bunny?

When I do practice linework in the morning I call it 'self calibration' It is very meditative

I think this phrasing is a lot better than something like "warm up sketch" (which then looks like a full image)

@Alicia Not bad! A lot better than mine would be.

On a general inking critique I'd make the lines a little thicker where the light isn't shining, so like bottom of the legs/boots. That's just me though.

Traditional day, today. I did this while I listened to the 3-point perspective podcast on transitioning from another career. Perhaps I should keep my day job...
I must confess that I get a little impatient drawing straight lines, even though I really enjoy hatching in creating values. I thought today, Hey! why not draw a face and see if you have gotten any better since this straight line stuff is boring? Well, it seems if I am concentrating on my lines, they are great (well, better anyway), when I am concentrating on a picture I am not so confident. I think it is what I am always telling my students. "Don't see it as a face, see it as a series of lines and shapes. Maybe I need to listen to my own advice as an art teacher. Even so, it IS improvement.

@chrisaakins omg i met someone once that enjoyed stippling I was like. What? Why? But it did look cool... yeah I hope you dont feel bad about not quitting your day job. I’m not either and am going to try to gradually transition into a job that is closer to publishing or art or printing.
