How To Ink 2.0 Group Runthrough Week 1

@chrisaakins I agree. Last year for Inktober I used all Micron because my brush pen work looked like junk haha. This year I want to step out of the comfort zone a bit and see if I can improve with the brush pen.
-
Today is back to digital. I think my size was a little too small pixel wise. Oh well.
-
@Aleksey
You're putting me to shame with all those pages, man!
You all are
I get the feeling we're all gonna see a massive spike in skill after this run through!

One of the practices I remembered was to hold the brush pen in the air, and only let the tip of the pen touchs the paper when making marks on the paper
I tried this for a few strokes this morning.
It did not work out :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_cold_sweat:
Definitely something to think about practicing!

Some notes doubling as practice from the hatching video!
I love how the style of hatching leads to the next note section
Super cool. 'Notes as art' are always really neat!

@Braden-Hallett Attached an image here to show the posture I mentioned. I do not think I am going to do inking in this posture at all :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_closed_eyes: The point for me was to do this for a few strokes, so it will give me an illusion that inking with the normal posture is not that hard.
-
Continuing with the theme of notes doubling as practice, kinda fun

@Aleksey I bought a refillable one from michaels and it falls apart and leaks everywhere. I was so upset with it that I havenβt used it since the first time. The dip pen has been nice to me. Lol. I would be interested to hear how your new one behaves. =)x
-
@xin-li i think my arm would be like jelly after doing a page that long. Lol. Kudos
.
I have noticed muscles in my hand getting tired because of the forced control in these exercises. Is anyone elseβs noticing new muscles in their fingers?
-
@xin-li This is really cool and I can imagine that it would seriously improve your motor control. I have some brushes that my son brought back from his study abroad in China and I'm definitely going to try this.
-
@burvantill yeah thatβs my concern too! But also i hate michaels
-
@Geoffrey-Anderson those are super cool
-
@burvantill I am noticing muscles in shoulder
-
@Braden-Hallett maybe this time next year!
-
@Geoffrey-Anderson these are so much fun to see!
-
Continuing with the strokes video. Iβm really struggling using the dip pen to make curved lines but this is great practice. Iβm also discovering that doing the repetitive line work is so meditative that it starts loosening me up creatively. (And today while listening to a long winded speaker I practiced line work on my program so itβs beneficial in a lot of ways!)

@xin-li ive inked like this.. with a sumi pen as well. It was a fun ink only live figure drawing class.
Also everyone's is doing so well! I love the hatching especially @BichonBistro
@demotlj the curved lines are awful!! I did so many of them the first time around and still couldnt get it right half the time. Still have trouble with them. I read this other book on inking that said one technique that works for some people is drawing the line with pencil first, and it's ok to do it in multiple strokes but you have to practice attaching the lines so it looks like 1 line.
@Geoffrey-Anderson i can tell you're having lots of fun
love the line variation part especially.
@chrisaakins i actually cant do this as well digitally.. it looks better at the end cause of undo! maybe its cause i put more pressure on myself when i do it traditionally.. who knows. good work!
@demotlj ive used a white out pen, ive used "dr ph martin's bleed proof white" it's pretty like paint, and it's ok to go over it again but ONLY with brush or marker maybe after it fully dries (pen will scratch it off) some people if they ruined a comic panel really badly or something spilled on the panel lets say, one technique is to redraw on a separate paper, cut out the bad one from the page and stick the good one to the page.
I've also used "super white" which is a japanese brand but if you dont use it the jar dries up completely and you have to throw it out. My favorite has been Dr Ph Martin's Bleed Proof White because it doesn't dry up, you just use a drop of water and it's fine again. -
@demotlj hehe. I actually just used the good old pental brush pen with this practice. Also the princicle is still the same as Jake mentioned in the inking video: use shoulder and elbow movement for long strokens, and wrist movement for short strokes.
-
A calm way of starting my work day today. Today's practice is done with technical pen and sumi brush (my pental brush ran out of ink, and you probably can spot out when I switched the brush
I found it is much harder to get consistent line weight with sumi brushes, especially with curves.
