How To Ink 2.0 Group Runthrough Week 1
-
@demotlj I’ve used my dip pen a lot this year because I was tired of my microns running out of ink. Lol. I like the tactile feel of the nib on paper. But you do have to be a bit more cautious because of the drip factor. Your right about the circles. I don’t have any tips for that aside from making sure you have enough room on your desk to rotate the paper without knocking over the ink bottle.
. I haven’t used it for this practice stuff yet though, because I’ve been away from home when I do the practice. I am kind a hoping that I will be able to just jump right into the brush pen
and not have to use the dip for inktober...a girl can dream
.
-
@demotlj the dip pen is the most difficult of all—great job!
-
@burvantill i ordered a china made fountain pen from ebay and am going to modify it to my liking. Apparently you can replace nibs and the converters (cartridges you can fill with whatever ink you like) with other fancier ones to your liking. I am gonna share it once it arrives. But because it’s ebay it will take 2 months!! It’s fine though it only cost 2$ per pen.

Question for those using traditional inking -- in the Supplies chapter Jake Parker recommends Tombow correction tape for mistakes but I assume that would work only if you are scanning a piece because otherwise the tape would be noticeable, right? If you are trying to do a finished piece, do you ever use a correction method and if so, what do you use?
-
@Braden-Hallett oh no! Wait, this is a good thing... reason to buy more art supplies! Haha
-
@demotlj I’ve used white out but not the tape kind. Either way, it’s going to show a little bit but if you’re colouring over with markers or painting, it’s not as noticeable.
-
@chrisaakins I agree. Last year for Inktober I used all Micron because my brush pen work looked like junk haha. This year I want to step out of the comfort zone a bit and see if I can improve with the brush pen.
-
Today is back to digital. I think my size was a little too small pixel wise. Oh well.

@Aleksey
You're putting me to shame with all those pages, man!
You all are
I get the feeling we're all gonna see a massive spike in skill after this run through!

One of the practices I remembered was to hold the brush pen in the air, and only let the tip of the pen touchs the paper when making marks on the paper
I tried this for a few strokes this morning.
It did not work out :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_cold_sweat:
Definitely something to think about practicing!

Some notes doubling as practice from the hatching video!
I love how the style of hatching leads to the next note section
Super cool. 'Notes as art' are always really neat!
-
@Braden-Hallett Attached an image here to show the posture I mentioned. I do not think I am going to do inking in this posture at all :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_closed_eyes: The point for me was to do this for a few strokes, so it will give me an illusion that inking with the normal posture is not that hard.
-
Continuing with the theme of notes doubling as practice, kinda fun
-
@Aleksey I bought a refillable one from michaels and it falls apart and leaks everywhere. I was so upset with it that I haven’t used it since the first time. The dip pen has been nice to me. Lol. I would be interested to hear how your new one behaves. =)x
-
@xin-li i think my arm would be like jelly after doing a page that long. Lol. Kudos
.
I have noticed muscles in my hand getting tired because of the forced control in these exercises. Is anyone else’s noticing new muscles in their fingers?
-
@xin-li This is really cool and I can imagine that it would seriously improve your motor control. I have some brushes that my son brought back from his study abroad in China and I'm definitely going to try this.
-
@burvantill yeah that’s my concern too! But also i hate michaels
-
@Geoffrey-Anderson those are super cool
-
@burvantill I am noticing muscles in shoulder
-
@Braden-Hallett maybe this time next year!
