How to Ink Group Runthrough Week 3
-
@BichonBistro Your shapes look so good! Mine are disgraceful, lol. Kidding, but they are pretty bad, and I want to work on them more before I post. You have great line control and sense of form!
-
@Erin-Cortese I freehanded it. And I appreciate how you and @demotlj and @BichonBistro and @Braden-Hallett are such cheerleaders for our group, offering up up words of encouragement to everyone. You are keeping us pumped! Thank you!
-
@chrisaakins Awe thanks, I’m glad I can contribute in some way! Seeing everyone’s progress is really inspiring. Your inking skills are great! I’m amazed that you did the bird nest freehand, it looks fantastic.
-
@BichonBistro said in How to Ink Group Runthrough Week 3:
longer straight lines feel less wobbly and a bit more controlled and this is just week 3
It doesn't take long at all to develop more control when you do it every day
Awesome shapes there!

I think I’m getting better with the brush pen. I’m going to focus on the beginning and end of my lines tho because I get a little hook when I rush, with all pen tools unfortunately. When I slow down and focus it doesn’t happen. I’m hoping that muscle memory will take hold.
Just keep inking just keep inking
-
@burvantill I think your brush pen is looking great. I tried brush pen last night instead of dip pen and it was so bad I’m not even going to post it. Getting fine lines is especially tough with a brush pen whereas with a dip pen, I can just use a finer nib. What is your secret?
-
@Erin-Cortese thanks so much for the encouragement Erin! Line control is a big challenge these days, but daily practice is really helping. I can feel it more than I can see it just yet
Posting my wobbles helps me move through the frustration of dissatisfaction with results and keep me doing-not-stewing. I’ve added “progress not product” to Jake’s “finished not perfect” voice in my head.
I think the infinite variation in the way you have illustrated form for your shapes is fantastic!
-
@Braden-Hallett thanks so much Braden—this group is an awesome motivator for daily practice!
-
@burvantill this just makes me smile
-
Every one practice forums looked fantastic yesterday! It’s amazing the progress you can see from day to day
I unfortunately took a “nap” and woke up this morning so no blobs from me but after work today will be getting some done!
-
@chrisaakins OMG, freehand?! I have to pencil all my shapes first
Freehanding would be Ph.D. level up—oh wait, you ARE working on your Ph.D., right?!
-
@demotlj Thanx
Think of Jake Parker’s butterfly licking the page
. You literally BARELY touch it and the ink comes out. This class is showing me that good lines are all about muscle control. The second I relax, my lines get shakey, I know with time that I will go faster but right now it takes FOREVER to do a page.
-
@BichonBistro hahaha! Not in art unfortunately. I have been drawing in ink all my life and drawing nature at that, so years of practice. But thanks for the affirmation! Your lines are looking nice, so don't sell yourself short.
Here is today's work. @demotlj You are so right about muscle control. My fine lines are definitely improving. @Braden-Hallett I can actually sorta kinda do the thick thin thing...
-
@burvantill your lines are looking good! I'm going to steal your by line: justkeepinkingjustkeepinking...
-
Thinking-inking about my happy place that is getting hammered by Dorian right now
. Fragile Ocracoke Island on the outer banks of North Carolina is experiencing terrible conditions right now. @Pamela-Fraley painted this beautiful watercolor—the heart is the tiny village of Ocracoke, accessible only by ferry.

Reconfigured my usual 'pen' so that it's more like an honest to god brush pen (opacity variance set to nuthin so it's black or white and thassit!) It's kinda like taking off the training wheels
Here's a comparison of a couple of characters. Old brush on left, new brush on right.
-
@burvantill Ahh, see, that’s my problem. My butterfly needs to go on a diet.
-
@Braden-Hallett The new brush looks a lot cleaner. I like it.
-
@demotlj love it!
-
I worked a little more with the brush pen tonight and decided I’ll definitely be sticking with the dip pen for Inktober.
