Sometimes I'll put a mark (or big patch of colour) on the edge of my paper to represent where the light's coming from. Or an arrow. Really, anything to remind myself that 'light be comin' from here, yarr'.
Though I'm slowly putting 'light' lower and lower on the list of priorities when it comes to inking
Contour line and whether an object is closer or further away is what I'm thinkin' of first right now.

Awesome! It's amazing how that nice darker local value really makes the chicken's face pop.

Here are my values practice. I tried a variety of pen and a variety of styles. Which do you think were most successful?

@chrisaakins haha brush pen #2 #2 is actually #3. I don't have to count, I'm an ARTIST!

@Braden-Hallett highly recommend trying out sumi brush. They are not very expensive, and they can hold a lot of water, and very soft. It is completely defferent feeling to paint with it.

@xin-li we use sumi brushes and ink here at school. They are very expressive, especially on rice paper.

Iβve been crazy busy with life and my schedule is falling apart a bit but trying to keep up with the linework warm ups still. Iβve got a few projects on the go which is stretching me thin but I canβt let go of the basic precursors. September/October/November is a BIG drawing chunk for me... canβt wait to get after it and share the work with my SVS fam!

Im trying to do it on this piece while keeping the textures in mind. Im still gonna do a wash but i think its convincing enough with the lines to indicate the candle is the light source

It has been quite enjoyable to not worry about the result, no pencil sketching, and just paint with ink.
I want to try with a bit more on doing planned illustrations with this medium, see how it works out. It is really hard to keep this "no worrying about the result" attitude when you have a planned image in mind. Suddenly there is a gap between your brain and what you produce with your hand. -
@xin-li oooo i really like these washes they look so good. The variation in values is very clear too

@chrisaakins I really like Brush Pen #2 and Ball point #2. You have great control with the brush pen!

@xin-li These look great - really smooth transitions! I worked with ink washes for the first time last October and it felt a bit disastrous. I think I was expecting it to move and spread easier. This is a good reminder to practice washes! I love the depth that you got with the houses!
