@deborah-Haagenson yes putting him in shadow would be great, I'm going to do a value study here soon and I'll do that. The boy is very scared of Will, hoping he doesn't find him hiding behind the tree. Thanks for your suggestions for painting snow as well!

@Aaron_T that was just my extra paper to the right, if I crop that wouldn't be there. I've decided I'm going to paint his whole face and maybe a little more tree of the side and then if I want to crop I can do that later. Thanks for your thoughts!

So one of my favorite illustrators of all time is Tony Diterlizzi... he did a book last Christmas called The Broken Ornament and I absolutely love the way he rendered snow...here are a couple of examples from the book. I'm going to try to use some of his techniques in my piece. IMG_20200104_205928826.jpg IMG_20200104_205958115.jpg

I've done a couple of tests on paper it didn't run out so good...I'm having a hard time making the boy in shadow. oh well, I'll give it a go!

The boy is looking pretty great! Love the shadows on his coat. I love the broken ornament book and I also bought it last year! The reindeer in it are awesome too!

Feedback welcome. I feel like I'm getting close to a finished piece, maybe another couple hours of shading, line work, etc.

Specifically, I was interested in your thoughts on:
-The way I cropped it. I have about 1/2" more of the image on the left and right side. I want the boy to feel sort of cramped hiding behind the tree so I got it pretty close but I can come in closer too.

                      • The snow...i'm not super pleased but I don't really know how to make it better without possibly making it worse lol.
                      • My shadows...are they making enough sense? My intention is fro the sun to be coming from the mid-left

And also anything else you see that needs extra attention, I would greatly appreciate πŸ™‚

(FYI this is a pic with my camera phone so it's got some weird shadow on the top and the color is a bit dull compared to the original. I'll scan the final.)

Ugh and it's horribly blurry too unless you click on it and blow it up big... I think my camera files are super large...

@KaraDaniel This is so great, I'm loving how close we are to the boy's face and his expression is wonderful. You've put us right there with him! The footprints feel a little lost at the mo but I guess they'll be getting some more shading in the final work you're planning.

@KaraDaniel Usually posting large files on forums will automatically resize the image nowadays. I don't think it is horribly blurry, but I know how you feel when you post something and it looks different from how you're used to seeing it! πŸ™‚

I think your piece is turning out wonderful so far. I really love the way you painted the footprints. I'm enjoying seeing the process!

So I'm pretty close to finish, yay!

Wondering what looks best...falling snow, no snow, or redo the snow flakes in a better way (like is it too much, too opaque, etc)

Thanks to everyone who has given me feedback thus far, I appreciate it!

@KaraDaniel This one with the falling snow looks great! It's fun to see the progression of your piece. This looks finished to me!
