Painting colour and light group runthrough week seveeeeeeeeen!
-
Here's week 7! I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I'm learning a lot (if only because I'm being forced to slow down and use reference!)
This week is reflected coloured light and dappled light. Gettin' into some subtle stuff!
Reminder: Everyone's welcome to participate, but in order to have access to the classes and homework you need an SVS subscription. It's worth it.
Feel free to do digital or traditional. It's all good.
This week!
Watch:
7 - reflected coloured light
and
C - Demo dappled
Homework:
Continue exercise 9 in the workbook!
Using either the lizard (such a fancy helmet) in the workbook or your own drawing (a sphere or object would be fine) AND REFERENCE (this is more for me than anything else because I'm still resisting using it!!!) paint a reflected coloured light and dappled light scenario.

Feel free to post your work for feedback and support here!

Does anyone have any reflected color reference I can borrow? I’m having a heck of a time finding good ones like Wills panda bear scenario.
-
@burvantill me too. I'll do some research this week.
Until then, I watched a Marco Bucci youtube tutorial which was awesome for understanding bounce light.

and I hear blender is super easy to use.
-
@Braden-Hallett wow. I have never seen anyone explain art theories like Marco Bucci. So good.
-
Dappled came easier to me than reflected color.
Edit: I redid reflected color AGAIN.
Kept it simple this time. Reflected green from the grass and left it at that.
-
@burvantill I'm still finding it hard to find reference for reflected light
I like the dappled light, though! Looks quite natural.
-
@burvantill my dappled light, however, does not I'm gonna have to try again tomorrow. I think doing something other than a sphere will help.
-
@Braden-Hallett try randomizing the strength of the light in the different dappled areas. I remember Will went back over and erased parts of the spots he initially laid down. So not all the dappled were the same light strength.
-
@Braden-Hallett i do notice the little reflected light tho. Subtle.
-
Found some reflected coloured light reference !!
-
I went back and redid my reflected color.
-
@burvantill Off of what is the light being reflected?
-
Better, but still not quite
-
@Braden-Hallett I'm working on watching the demo for dappled right now. I was wondering if you just have too much light in the background and/or it's not really obvious that there are for example trees or something casting the shadow/causing the dapples?
-
bounced reflected light (a bit harsh and blotchy). I could keep noodling but it seems like a waste of time to get perfection in studies?! I'm assuming I'll make it perfect later lol!!! Great practice tho!
-
@Braden-Hallett [Head slap!]
Excellent question!
I’m gonna keep workin on this. Thanx for the eye opener -
@Braden-Hallett The ball would have a cast shadow cutting off the dapples on the ground
-
The day totally got away from me! I'll post the next thread tomorrow

@burvantill said in Painting colour and light group runthrough week seveeeeeeeeen!:
@Braden-Hallett The ball would have a cast shadow cutting off the dapples on the ground
is true!
