Does anyone have a resource and online course recommendation for writing part of making children's books? or a creative writing class in general?

I am currently trying out Storyteller Academy with a monthly subscription. I think the teaching style does not fit me very well. I can not articulate why. I am browsing through a few more courses there, but most likely I will cancel the subscription for next month and looking for something else.

      Any suggestions?

@xin-li There's an SVS class on writing children's books. It's long, but there's a lot of creative writing gems hidden in there.

Apart from that, I'm certain that there's creative writing groups in your area. There's ALWAYS creative writing groups. Not always kidlit oriented, but still a place to workshop.

Have a look at this resource:

          https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/pixar/storytelling

The story construction info here is not unique solely to Pixar but I appreciate how they put it all together in this nice package!

@Braden-Hallett thank you so much. I have gone through the svs course 2 times I think. I might need to revisit that again. Is that a good course to do a run-through, you think?

@davidhohn thank you so much. That looks very very interesting. I will definitely go through the material.

I also have a similar question recently. I tried to search on Youtube and I found this:
                    https://www.curtisbrowncreative.co.uk/course/writing-and-illustrating-a-childrens-picture-book/
never try it myself but it looks legit (but it's pricey).

I also found this Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEdD2HW2-XI5vSaeOMJkPNw
She shares a little bit about how to write a picture book, try to look at it.

What I am doing now is try to read as many picture books as possible but since I don't have a big budget to buy them and the library here barely has English book, I am searching on Youtube (again). I found this channels quite helpful: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvdUKabPUkx6p-zYlrxmJJw
                    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEPsNDUhUm-7yZhUjQQNqwQ

                    Hope it helps! 🙂

@lenwen thank you for sharing the resources. I will definitely check these out 🙂

I am watching a course about making a picture book dummy at the Storyteller Academy. I am still not very used to the teaching style, but I started to find the information in the course helpful for me. I know the concept of book dummy for a while, but never manage to go through making one myself (I have attempted a couple of times during the last 2 years). The instructor walked through some of his books in the dummy stage, it was very useful for me to see dummies in various stages - how rough ideas start to become more and more concrete one dummy after another.

I also try to read as many picture books as possible. My local library's picturebook in English is also quite limited. But I manage to "read' some on youtube, as you did. I also got some picturebooks translated into Chinese sent to me from my mom in China, so my kid can learn Chinese (and I can study the art). I try to become better at study the books, not just read. How do you digest the books you read?

I am so glad people share resources on how to become author/illustrator here in the forum. I really want to try writing my own stories this year.

@xin-li , no problem! It helps that my daughter loves Owl Diaries, and I was lucky to find her 2014 6-part series on Children’s Book Creation.
