I know this isn't really storytelling, but I love doing pieces like this - I'm trying to figure out how to do work like this that tells a story πŸ€”

@Kristen-Lango This reminds me of the Ladybug picnic song from Sesame Street...or maybe Electric Company. One of those children's shows on PBS. Great party scene! =)x

@burvantill Aw thank you! I just watched that and was instantly put back into my child self - I'm certain I watched that as a kid and it's found it's way into my work, thanks for the throwback πŸ™‚ I'm so happy it reminds you of that kind of thing, I'll take being compared to PBS shows any day!!

I've been working on exploring scientific illustration as a career path. My day job has been hard (teacher), especially over the last week as we've had not one...not two...but three or four threats/altercations that resulted in a lot of rumors about kids bringing weapons to school over the last four days. Full time illustration is looking more appealing but it means building up my portfolio more.

So I've been working on these:

@lpetiti Those are fantastic. That would be a really interesting career path, I don't know a whole lot about it myself but I imagine a fundamental understanding of anatomy for different types of critters would be necessary as well as just an overall understanding of biology. Have you found any artists in that field that you like or could talk to about it?

I'm sorry you feel that way about your current profession, I come from a whole family full of teachers and understand those struggles fairly well. Also have the utmost respect for those in the field.

@Blitz55 Thanks! Yeah I've been hyper-vigilant the last few days because of everything going on (and that's not counting all the other stuff from this year...)

I'm still in the initial researching process; so far I've done some cursory research on some of the people and gotten a subscription to National Geographic for both reference and illustration inspiration.

Just an idea, but another place to find good inspiration is used book stores as well as libraries. Me and my fiancΓ© are kind of art book hounds and typically we come across really good books of that kind with amazing animal art at used book stores. And usually fairly cheap.

Today I finished the first image in my big summer project: A Little Red Calendar.

I've previously made a bird calendar, but friends from different directions suggested I put one together that was a bit more story-based. I'm very interested in putting Little Red in contexts that are outside the normal scope of the story--seasons, holidays, interacting with the other characters in ways that show things happening "in the margins".

If I can keep this up, and still have time to read the plethora of books I want to tackle, too, I might have a good chunk of it done by the time school starts back up again in the fall. 11 months more, and a cover. Whew! My husband will be doing the calendar formatting later (I don't know inDesign worth crap) as he did on my last calendar. And it's going to be another 11x17" double-sided flip-top with a coil binding because that's what I can assemble at home. I may do a smaller size this time, too, but we'll see. I'm also making phone wallpaper versions of each of these images (without the calendar part) so that takes a bit of reformatting, too.

@lpetiti That is surely a great incentive towards art! I teach and I like it but would love to teach less.
