@burvantill I really like the way you tell a story without any words and your colors and character.

        @PenAndrew
is this Pandora's box: It is a short story by Frank L. Baum (Wizard of Oz) that is called The Box of Robbers. I adapted it down to 8 pages for the Folk Tale week then stretched it back out a littleπŸ™ƒ to 13 pages of story. There is a cover and title page as well. I am going to do some drawings for marketing that will be included in the "book". I am treating this project as pure education from beginning to end. My goals with this is to publish it for free on the web and then use it to run a VERY small Kickstarter for printing, so that I can learn all aspects of web comics.
any tips on how I can combine my writing and drawing skills: I HIGHLY recommend Comic Lab podcast. And watch the pros. You can learn so much from just watching and looking at what the pros put out there. My go to people when I am stuck are Skottie Young, Jake Parker and the guys from Comic Lab. Skottie's usual team of creators are outstanding. I am in love with Jean Francois Beaulieu's color (and love saying his name☺️) and Jorge Corona's drawings are very inspirational. Writing is very important though. You can have beautiful art, but if its not telling a story then it can fall flat. SVS is a good place to learn about telling a story. Lee White's Visual Storytelling Techniques is a great place to start if you haven't taken that lesson yet.
I really like the way you tell a story without any words: The words are coming LOL. Page 2 doesn't have any, but there rest of the story is packed. I had to edit out a ton. Frank Baum was a bit wordy with the characters. After I finish with the color I will "Letter" the pages. Nate Piekos has an awesome book for that.
When you get to the actual making of the comic, SVS has a couple of comic courses. One by Jake Parker and another by Nathan Hale. Both have great content.

@burvantill I Love Skottie Young in fact I got a free comic from Amazon of his - the first I hate Wonderland, I find it so inspiring. And I love Jakes work, they both worked together didn't they on Rocket Raccoon.
Thanks for taking the time to reply and share these things. It is also very interesting to hear about all that you are doing. Yes I remember seeing Jakes course on comics and I plan to go through all the inking courses when I have my summer break from teaching- coming soon!

@burvantill Thanks Lisa, there are a lot of positive things that you have shared here, and you remind me that there are always steps towards a goal, but one must take them!

Thanks for your generosity and giving your time and such a good set of suggestions, that's a lot of exciting things to pursue here, and I will write down everything you said! I will get back to you on my progress.

Had to take a break from CB stuff to focus on my webcomic. Still working on Eps 3, part 4 and 5 now. Once I finish Eps 3 I'm going to take a break from my comic and focus the next 2-3 weeks on my Children's Book portfolio. So you'll see more of me then.

Currently here is what's on my screen. Omega Elixir on Tapas It's a bit of a spoiler too. Hee Hee.

As always - having fun with messy paints πŸ™‚

I have been in love with turners pastel acrylic gouache lately but want to try out normal gouache more once I save up to buy the good stuff. I'm slowly working on a Florida animals ABC book that is just a personal project (mainly for me to practice with just paints as opposed to adding colored pencil as well). And I've also been painting more botanical images lately (I visited my brother recently and he has venus fly traps and sundews as houseplants so I had fun using those as reference). I'm also doing some digital work which I can't share but I prefer sharing my traditional stuff anyways.

This last one is my most recent (finished today πŸ™‚ ) was very fun to make. It's for Monsters.go on instagram. I use slightly textured paper and start with colored pencil. I outline and add the darkest values with the pencils and then I add the watercolor and then go back over with more pencils.

Hi Mary, thanks so much for sharing your process on these pieces (textured paper, and use of pencil and watercolor). The outcome is very rich, and of course the images are really fun.

@Mary-Toth It is also good to see what Prismacolor premier can do as I bought a set of these recently and haven't used them yet.

I also noticed on the second read through that you shared your process- thanks for that.
I have been recently trying to put down a wash of watercolour first and then pencils on top. I would like to try your step of watercolour second. You have a lovely softness to the image.

                                Another master study!

Due to limited time, I am just having fun with studies and taking an SVS course here and there when time allows, which hasn’t been very often as of late.

A very rough sketch of an Alice illustration I’ll be working on for a few. If anyone’s ever played American mcgees Alice by ea games, this is influenced by it but I will include both Alices, kinda weird I know…

@Mary-Toth These are fabulous! When I use my prismacolor pencils, you can also use gamsol on them. After a few layers of pencils, use a paintbrush etc dipped in some gamsol and it breaks down the wax in the pencil and it makes the pencil have a painterly look to it. Useful for blending especially.
