SVS Virtual Studio JUNE 2022π

Went by the bookstore and bought three picture books. I was looking for books that were in the vein of how I like to render illustrations. I found one treasure especially: Ryan T Higginsβ book Mother Bruce. I was inspired to see if I could emulate his style using Inky from my mice stories.
Here is a snapshot of Higginβs work from his website:
And here is my rendering of Inky enjoying the summer night.
Not half bad! I wasnβt going so much for his stylization so much as his line work and coloring. His line work has very thick outlines and lots of thin messy lines for texture. He uses a single texture overlay on all his coloring and looks like digital watercolor.

Some fanart from twitter suggestions last night

A little bit left to do, but enjoying colouring up this bee girl
-
@KatrinaF WOW! Very cool. Where do you post/publish this?
-
@Jeremiahbrown Love it! Those are some chill parents. Unless that is a motel room that they are fantastically destroying, then I can understand the attitude. Lol!
-
I'm working on character designs for my children's book series (the books will be in Chinese). Here are the model sheets of some of the characters!
Have process photos on my website too:
-
@Mary-Toth love the style and colours
-
@JQ These are so good. Hopefully I can buy your book when it is available as I am in China.
-
@AngelinaKizz
Does this count? Toddler raided my iPad while I was trying to do a lesson assignment -
@JQ Coming along so nicely! Maybe we should start our own SG illo critique group if there isn't one now! Haha.
-
Making a pack of learning cards. Hopefully I can finish and open a preorder before September. I am committing myself. It is scary
-
@Melissa-Candrasaputra of course it does!!! I like their color choices!
-
@kylebeaudette really like the textures on her fur!
-
@Melissa-Candrasaputra thank you and yes totally!
-
@Melissa-Candrasaputra really cute concept for "two peas in a pod"
-
@PenAndrew Thank you! Haha unfortunately it's apparently fairly difficult to break into the China market as some local Chinese publishers tell me...you must find a publisher in China who will edit it to make sure it fits the China market, and every batch of books you ship there must be separately inspected and approved... Even going to Hong Kong and Taiwan, the Chinese script has to be translated into two different traditional scripts
So yeah, the international English market is definitely still more commercially viable
-
@AngelinaKizz wow you passed on your artistic genes! Really good!
Only one of my three likes to draw and sheβs not anywhere near this ability lol -
I made a NEW WORK for my children's book portfolio! It took me 2 months to create. I wanted to challenge myself with working on something for a longer term. I also challenged myself to post my WIP here on my Instagram for accountability.
This work is called 'God With Us'. It's about going through ones own wildernesses of grief and loss.
All for the glory of God. Thank you lovely people,
-
@chrisaakins I LOVE Ryan T. Higgins' books! Check out the We Don't Eat Our Classmates series -- hilarious!
If you look at the copyright notice, often he includes a description of how he created the illustrations -- might be helpful as you're doing studies.

Hey all! Just finished adding some digital touch ups to this otherwise traditional experimental piece - where watercolor pencils meet crayon cut out collage
It's not my best work but I was able to connect with that notion of "play" while creating.
