 I had another go tweaking this technique I found out about using normal maps and wrote up another article about it here if anyone wants to read something mildly geeky (ok it's pretty full on geeky sorry). (ok it's pretty full on geeky sorry).

 Update on this:  
 Renders using Blender. I think I'm done with this now. Like I said before, if anyone else is interested in this technique for lighting flat 2d art with 3d shaders or normal maps in Photoshop I wrote about it on my blog. I'll get on with other art to do with my personal project now.
