Piece for the Live Critique on Tuesday
-
For those interested, these are the progress pics from really rough sketch to final. Currently, this is more or less my usual work process.
-
This is really interesting, Shinji, thanks for sharing! It is always great to see how you guys do what you are doing.
-
@Jana Thanks!
@craigrussellart Yeah, I'm looking forward to it too. A little nervous, but it should be a good learning experience :). One thing that I'm learning more and more, is that the most important element of an image is whether or not it conveys a message to its viewer. In my opinion, technique and all the other art theory falls secondary to the emotional impact of an image. Which is probably why there are so many appreciators of all sorts of styles of art. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm still trying to figure out how to portray myself through my art, and I'm sure you're trying to do the same
-
@shinjifujioka Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It's all about conveying feeling and mood, as well as telling stories. I'm realising that more and more these days.
You shouldn't be nervous. Your work's really good. And the feedback will help you get better and better.
-
really beautiful. I will be critiquing this one tonight and have some suggestions with a paint over and examples I'll be going over step by step. I can't wait! It's always so fun (and challenging) when starting out with a piece as complete as this one is.
-
Fantastic work shinji, I also looked at your blog.Helmet and hound looks amazing.
-
@Lee-White Thanks! It'll be my first real critique, so I'm looking forward to it! I'll try to get as much out of it as I can.
-
@Lee-Holland Thanks! Loved your otter pics.
-
Really beautiful work, Shinji - I agree with all the other glowing comments
It will be interesting to see how they critique it tonight..I hope the video is available soon afterwards like with the 3rd Thursdays...I like that the red paint pot is the only bit of red, it focuses your eyes into that spot on the floor. I wonder if maybe the pictures at the top could tell more of the story...I can see flame and maybe flying in those shapes which fits with what you said.
-
@Dulcie Thanks!
-
@Lee-White @Will-Terry Just wanted to say thanks again for the critique. I knew that the image could be pushed further, but I didn't realize how much more I could do. Definitely informative and I'd recommend anyone thinking of signing up to do so at the next opportunity. Also, will the recording be available to view? I wasn't able to watch the last two critiques and was hoping to be able to view those as well.
-
@shinjifujioka Hey thanks for posting your progress pics. They're really helpful to see how you got your lighting figured out. This is still something I'm having a hard time with. Also seeing your piece in the critique last night was great. I learned so much from that one.
-
@Jonathon-B Glad that it helps! I always like seeing how other artists get from point A to point B. I think much of what I learned came from observing how other artists work.
And for lighting, I reference Pascal Campion's work quite a bit.
-
Great work Shinji! Here's the image from the crit if you want it...
-
@Lee-White Thanks! Gonna get started on tweaks today.
-
Looks fantastic! Glad it was helpful to you and everyone else. I didn't sign up this time because I needed more time to make a piece worth critiquing...but will definitely do it next time. I really hope there will be a recording to view...would have watched live but they take place at 4am my time, and I value my sleep
-
I really love this piece and your drawing is spot on. Great work.
-
The paint on his outfit is a really nice touch!
-
Made tweaks based off of the feedback from the critique session. I think it feels noticeably more vibrant compared to pre-critique. @Lee-White, I think I'm probably too timid to push it as far as you did, but those suggestions you made really helped to breathe more life into the image. Thanks!

Oh shoot...forgot to fix his left leg...
