So I ended up doing two different Mermay contest pictures. I already uploaded one on the challenge but after doing the second, I may want to take it down and submit the second one. Which one would you choose and why?
      A.

I would choose the Retirement Mermaids. Here are my reasons why:

          1. In my opinion, it has more story in it. I think the second one has a situational context, but the Retirement one has more opportunity for character development, and in that sense it's deeper and richer and draws me in more. It just seems more "narrative" to me.

          2. While the second one has a lot of gorgeous brushwork and frenetic detail, the object of the conflict seemed out of the frame to me until I noticed the shark (?). Ultimately, I wonder if it has a weaker composition than the Retirement Mermaids.

          3. The black outline on the Warrior Mermaid seems to pull it off the page a bit harshly to my eye. It doesn't have the same cohesive unity that the Retirement image has.

I think the Warrior Mermaid is a gorgeous piece. I just feel like the Retirement Mermaids has more "depth"... yark yark yark... ๐Ÿ˜‰ My 2ยข.

            Retirementt mermaidsss 100%%

Like everyone said both look nice and while the second one looks cool theres more story in the first one.

And also you clearly had more fun with the first one because of the level of silly you got to do.

@chrisaakins These illos are so different. Personally, I lean towards the pool scene because the concept is more unexpected, less traditional, than the other illo. Whereas we usually imagine mermaids as beautiful young females, there's something humorous about the slightly sunburnt central figure with the big stomach and his big bottle of Sun Away, and I like looking around the scene and noticing the different characters (the old lady mermaids in the background, the purple-haired mermaid in the foreground, the thin merman in the mid-ground), and also wondering about the setting (it reminds me of a Miami beach resort. All the little details are fun to find and think about.

Im late to the party, but I like the retirees, too. The merman is fierce, though. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeap the first one is better story telling for the contest purpose. But your other one is a great character as well. Both outstanding pieces.
