@BichonBistro I have a Pentel brush pen waiting for me at the post office. Do you like yours? I am excited to start using it. 😬

@MichaelaH it feels good to be setting achievable, realistic goals—these exercises have helped me identify areas of greatest difficulty and intermediate steps and methods I can take to inch toward the hardest exercises (definitely long lines with any tool and consistency with brush pen, even for short straight lines). 👍🏻

@burvantill the brush pen is in the “way beyond reach” category for me, so I am not sure my experience is applicable, but I find the Pentel more difficult to control than the Zebra Fude Brush (double-sided with a marker point at the other end).

The pentel brush tip is longer and thicker and seems to be more malleable and I think your lines will have more character using it. The Fude seems to have less give, which helps me when trying to make fine lines and practice consistency which is a long-term goal. I think that will be more achievable for me with the Fude, but I prefer the feel of the Pentel when I don’t have a goal in mind, just messing around.

I believe you will enjoy your Pentel brush 😊

@Bricz-Art totally, although I struggle with brush pens in general. I'm more of a micron pen/color pencil kid of guy. Keep up the good work.

I decided to change things up and go the traditional route since I need to work on that, too. I may alternate between the two. My grad school glasses started this week so I may be inconsistent. Right now I am avoiding doing them and drawing lines instead. 🙂

I find pulls easier and more consistent than pushes, and hatching horizontally the wrist is WAY easier than in any other direction. Maybe I ought to just turn the page and the tablet when I do hatching. lol.

@chrisaakins I like the idea of turning the paper 😉 your calligraphy adds a very nice touch! I find this practice such a good way to focus on what works & doesn’t and the reasons why, without the distraction of all the elements involved when creating a final “product”.

Best wishes in your degree program—I can understand why these exercises call you away from those courses😝

Sometimes, I like to try something that is impossible for me to do, to make difficult things seem a bit easier. (Does that make sense?)
I practiced a bit chinese carligraphy when I was a kid. One of the practices I remembered was to hold the brush pen in the air, and only let the tip of the pen touchs the paper when making marks on the paper (the wrist, elbow and shoulder should not touch the table at all). So I applied that method on practicing drawing straight lines. This was the result of my attempt drawing long consistent straight lines.
After doing this, drawing straight lines with the normal posture seems much more managable. Anyone wants to try this :-)?
