February contest WIP as is tradition. Feedback always welcome!

Here's some colour comps for my February piece. I don't have any whimsical pieces in my portfolio, so for two of them I've gone super whimsy. Such whim.
I've been trying to work solely in shapes and colour (trying to keep value first) and get it ALL figured out before I even think about sketching.
Which option do you prefer? I think A reads easiest, but I'm always partial to sci-fi stuff.
Thanks in advance!

I loooooove A the best! Pure magic.
-
@Braden-Hallett I think A has a more interesting story than B and night-time-as-fluid/fabric/physical thing is one of my favourite illustration ideas. They're always so magical.
My favourite though is C - the shapes are wonderful and it's awesome & sci-fi but very relatable (& cute) - he's just a kid looking out of his bedroom window at the night sky
I feel this is actually a more unique idea but if you want to go for something more dreamy/surreal then I think A rather than B.

Honestly, I really like 'C' as well. I know I say this every contest, but I may try and do this one as well as option A.
Thanks for the feedback!

I like all three but the I really like the gesture of the night falling in A & B, although I have to say, the little light under the umbrella(?) doesnβt seem to fit with the flow of the rest of the image in both. I like the idea but I think it needs a design adjustment. A is my favorite. I like balloons.
-
I really like A! I think the idea and composition is great, however I do find the person holding the umbrella a little distracting... Maybe you could combine the idea of A and C, and have a child in the window of the house in A looking out in amazement? You would probably have to play with the scale of the house in that case though
-
All of these are great. I especially love the concept A. I agree with @eriberart that the yellow window of the house and the yellow light under the umbrella are competing for the attention.
To me the main story is the two kids spilling the night from the buckets. I would also consider making the kid on the ground a cat, or a dog, just to keep the focus on the two kids above the sky. -
@burvantill @eriberart @xin-li Interesting! I'll play around with moving the house and window to the umbrella holder spot. If the balloon goers are the focus, it'll be fun to play around with their design a little (they were going to be very silhouetted).
I have another idea to use the night falling on an umbrella
Thanks for the feedback!

@Braden-Hallett Yup. A. no doubt. I strongly agree with the window idea of the amazed kid. I think the umbrella thing leaves me thinking "hmmm..so how does that work exactly?" and throws me out into disbelief. Cool concept. I was thinking of something along the same lines but decided to go the "things go bump in the night" route instead."

@chrisaakins Lot's of votes for A! Thanks for the feedback

I cleaned up option A. Initially the window was lit, but it was still really overpowering, so I figured, why not dark? I think the star that's fallen too far onto the roof is enough of a draw to bring the eye down. Also, blue balloons. If the kids in the balloons are the focal point, they gotta contrast more
Or maybe I could have the moon embedded in the thatched roof?
I also added an option. I REALLY like the idea of an umbrella blocking nightfall. Dunno why
-
So lovely, all of them! Though I love option A most!
-
Always love your concepts. I've been playing around with the idea of a dragon flying up from the horizon, pulling the night sky up with him, but now kind of feel like it may be too close in concept to yours. I need to get on the forum more often!
-
@idid Still A! Sounds good

I'm absolutely CERTAIN that my concepts are close to others (if not EERILY similar with option D) Please PLEASE run with your concept because I think it's really neat
-
@Braden-Hallett Oh my gosh...A!
-
@Laurel-Aylesworth Yup. I think A's gonna win it
-
I'm gonna do this one as well as option 'A' since it's really really easy and fast (and I really like it)
-
@Braden-Hallett I really love the idea of A. But I am sure whatever you decide on will be amazing as always.

Theyβre all amazing!
