I learned some very valuable ways of thinking of how to approach a drawing, perspective is a big priority of mine to focus in this year. These lessons are just what I was looking for and then some! Jake is a great teacher 🙌🏾🤟🏾

I agree, the moment before it happens would be the most high-tension of the two choices and therefore more interesting than the aftermath scene.

hi. i've attached screen shots of the colour exercise number 2. feedback and tips much appreciated. the submarine was day one and i was much worse confused trying to mix colours from the 3 core colours provided. still am. i complicated things when i tried to use colour to create form shadow around submarine and fish eyes. i seemed to get better the more time i spent on the robot and space dog. then the crazy flying alien with eyes all over the place was fun until i realised i painted over the pdf where the ray gun was instead of on a separate layer. I'll keep working on these though i cant get the mix of colour right and no idea what i'm doing with brush settings. was also trying to apply what i learned from the Light and Shadow value course from Lee White to give form to the subject

Hey all, I’m working on the second assignment for Will’s class Developing Great Visual stories! The first prompt I chose is “And then the king slipped.” So my basic concept is that the king’s little daughter, the princess, is giving the dog a bath, but things get messy when the dog decides to jump out and run around, with water and soap suds going everywhere and the princess chasing after him. Meanwhile, the king is walking by, reading some important documents and not paying attention. He slips on a bar of soap because he’s not looking.

I’m trying to decide whether to illustrate the moment just before he slips or just after. I’m posting an image of both ideas, but keep in mind they’re SUPER rough, so you can hardly tell what’s what (which is why I labeled things). I haven’t narrowed down the exact compositions yet, but just looking for your initial thoughts. Thanks!!

Thought i'd give it a go at the pencil demo. i don't have a white gel pen and that is now on my next shopping list. any tip on the 2b pencil when setting local tone? i don't know if i pressed a little too hard because my values for core and form shadow are lost in the dark values. i got so flustered i was searching for control-Z on my sketch book!
i dont have a wide array of pencils. just standard cheap pencils from H to 8HB and a mechanical pencil i use for sketching. guessing i should budget just a handful reliable set

For assignment 2, I tried to illustrate "That ended the party":

Usually, cake ends the party at children's birthday parties.

There aren't that many parties illustrated in the picture books I had, but there's a dog party in Go, dog. Go!

So, I tried to illustrate the end of a dog party.
The dog serving cake is maybe a bit too reminiscent of the dog serving cake in Go, dog. Go! But this is just a rough draft.

I had a lot of trouble thinking of a good story idea for these prompts. (I showed this to my family and they seemed to find it just weird.) Maybe they are too complicated as a starting point for me.

what I see is: the guy in white shirt on the sofa was beaten up by the guy who is holding the wrist of a woman. Probably the white shirt man was drunk and say something inappropriate to the woman. Her boyfriend punched the drunk man as a response. Everyone is shoked by what just happened.

In terms of feedback, there is something weird happening in the face of the man holding the wrist of a woman. It seems that the face of another woman is blending with his face, while this woman should be in the background.

Edit: wait, I understood, the man and the woman are "cuddling" a girl, probably their daughter. This is why the girl is in front of the man face but behing the woman's breast. Hence, the drunk man probably said something inappropriate to their daughter.

For the 4th one I can see why some people said happy because of the yellow, but the purple interrupts the cheer a little bit to me. Which is why I feel like it looks like annoyance to me, like it's mixed up and dosnt know what to be, and the mood is a little off.

Copics are superior if you have a large budget and desire the greatest quality and widest range of color options. If you only need one or two certain markers, they are also "the ones." Also, you will be able to save money over time thanks to their changeable nibs and refillable ink cartridges.

@GabeRobinson it's kind of like listening to their podcast but it's watching them work through their processes. I really enjoy the studio sessions. I wish they'd add more

I think it is a very good try and there is no shame to give up on it and start something new. It’s part of the learning process. We try things and throw them 😃

But if you find the energy to continue working on it. I would say, try to answer the questions: what is the main subject/character of the artwork? What is the narrative? Is the composition making it clear?

In terms of adding details, my advice is to try to keep things simple (not too many elements), and then collect references for each element so that you can use these references as inspiration/model when drawing the details. Finally, I would advice not to detail all the elements of the drawing, but only the ones that you want the viewer to look at.

An illustration as big as this one is a big endeavour, with many steps and levels. So don’t worry if you don’t get to the end or if you are not happy with the result. What’s important is what you’ve learn on the way 🙂

I did finally do one where the fence looked okay. But I accidentally chose a really bad angle (I did the windmill, but only a tiny bit of it ended up being visible and it looks unidentifiable, so I left it out of this view). So if we're going to be working on the same scene in the next course (as I'm gathering from another post in the forum), I think I have to do it over again from a better angle.

If only I could could get Photoshop from crashing every five minutes this would go a lot faster. I flatten everything down and only have a few layers at a time, but it still just...freezes up.
