I decided to change things up and go the traditional route since I need to work on that, too. I may alternate between the two. My grad school glasses started this week so I may be inconsistent. Right now I am avoiding doing them and drawing lines instead.

I find pulls easier and more consistent than pushes, and hatching horizontally the wrist is WAY easier than in any other direction. Maybe I ought to just turn the page and the tablet when I do hatching. lol.

@chrisaakins I like the idea of turning the paper your calligraphy adds a very nice touch! I find this practice such a good way to focus on what works & doesn’t and the reasons why, without the distraction of all the elements involved when creating a final “product”.

Ok i have to share this because @Jake-Parker really loves his pentel pocket brushpen. I ordered a pentel tradio stylo pen because one of my previous inking teachers has one and I tried it and it’s amazing. Cant wait till it arrives. I highly recommend.

Some notes doubling as practice from the hatching video!

Sometimes, I like to try something that is impossible for me to do, to make difficult things seem a bit easier. (Does that make sense?)
I practiced a bit chinese carligraphy when I was a kid. One of the practices I remembered was to hold the brush pen in the air, and only let the tip of the pen touchs the paper when making marks on the paper (the wrist, elbow and shoulder should not touch the table at all). So I applied that method on practicing drawing straight lines. This was the result of my attempt drawing long consistent straight lines.
After doing this, drawing straight lines with the normal posture seems much more managable. Anyone wants to try this :-)?

You all shame me with your productivity! I have only managed this short page so far. I am doing this with a dip pen and I used the orange ink because I rarely use it in actual paintings so thought it would be good for practice work. For most of these, I drew the lines widely spaced and then went back and put lines between the first, and in some cases did that a third time which I find really requires a lot of control. On some I was trying to vary the width using pen pressure.

Does anyone else use a dip pen? You can see that I need to work on flow consistency (and being more careful not to smear which is what happened on the third left one). I haven't figured out if it is possible to do a circle without stopping to turn the paper because you can't really push a dip pen. If anyone has hints for dip pens, let me know!

@demotlj I’ve used my dip pen a lot this year because I was tired of my microns running out of ink. Lol. I like the tactile feel of the nib on paper. But you do have to be a bit more cautious because of the drip factor. Your right about the circles. I don’t have any tips for that aside from making sure you have enough room on your desk to rotate the paper without knocking over the ink bottle. . I haven’t used it for this practice stuff yet though, because I’ve been away from home when I do the practice. I am kind a hoping that I will be able to just jump right into the brush pen and not have to use the dip for inktober...a girl can dream.

@burvantill i ordered a china made fountain pen from ebay and am going to modify it to my liking. Apparently you can replace nibs and the converters (cartridges you can fill with whatever ink you like) with other fancier ones to your liking. I am gonna share it once it arrives. But because it’s ebay it will take 2 months!! It’s fine though it only cost 2$ per pen.

Question for those using traditional inking -- in the Supplies chapter Jake Parker recommends Tombow correction tape for mistakes but I assume that would work only if you are scanning a piece because otherwise the tape would be noticeable, right? If you are trying to do a finished piece, do you ever use a correction method and if so, what do you use?
