@lauramarie_art hi! Welcome to the forum! It’s sad to think that you were discouraged from Illustration. I find that the ones who usually say there are no jobs in illustration are also the ones who know little to nothing about the field. No offense to whoever told you that though. I’m sure they were also just looking out for your best interest. It’s not for everyone but with enough grit, good skills and a little bit of luck, you can make it. I wish you the best!

I honestly wasn’t expecting the sketch to become something so awesome, so I was surprised when I scrolled down and saw your supermarket scene. I’m also into miniatures, but just miniature paintings... not as cool as 3D. 🙂

I just signed up also, but I am actually returning to this field after being out of it several decades. For me, I share your sense of being overwhelmed - so I'm taking it step by step and also peeking at other courses that I'm interested in taking up later.

I was in a BFA, however, I ran out of financial aid - and hope to one day return.

The first course I selected was Inking - started back on the fundamentals. And it's something I have not done in about 3 decades (yes 30 years). I am enjoying the course, doing the exercises and some of it is coming back to me. I actually ordered the old fashioned feather quill and ink in the bottle - and will be using these once I get a bit more confident.

@Julia Hi Julia. I, like you . do books for a hobby. I have found 3 FREE programs that I am learning to use. Not sure if they work with Apple computers though. They are Inkscape (Illustrator subsitute), GIMP (photoshop substitute). and Krita a painting program that you can use a tablet with. They all work with each other. I suggest using GIMP for cleaning up drawings to print. I use the clone tool and that's about all I have ever needed just to clean things up. If they don't have these programs for Apple, maybe there are some other ones. Maybe you can look up Freeware for Macintosh and see if you can find anything.
