@Camomilla Thank you! 😃 I did do this traditionally. As for the lights, I was going for a streetlamp shining through the window sort of feel, since they're kind of orange-y, but you're right, I definitely could've gone a bit cooler with it.

@RChabot It's true... I totally lied about the horizon line as it appears that the sun is setting from all directions. Some times I totally cheat like that. Good observation.

@Lee-White Thank you so much for all the great advice on both of my pieces. Also the tip on color management really helped. Definitely going to do some reworking on these. Especially the advice on the wizard piece I was focused so much on making the drawing right I missed the concept.

I do have one suggestion which is content based. When I think about the term "wizard training" I think of all sorts of cool stuff that would be involved in that. In my opinion, that is what made harry potter so popular. Who wouldn't want to go to hogwarts to learn about all that stuff. They made it fun! So when I see this image, it looks plausible, but it doesn't look fun. It looks like he's doing homework with an old dude watching his every move. Which is stressful!

So I would suggest making something that really invites the viewer into the world of what "wizard training" might be like. Have some fun with it. Think about the personality of both characters andn what they would be doing in the scene based on that. A nervous young wizard and an older experienced wizard who has seen it all. Very different reactions between the two.

Here's a quick paint. Use as much of it as you want. Think about dragons and runes and potions and all sorts of stuff. Make me want to become a wizard in training! : )

I haven't really committed to color and contrast (light/shadow) yet. Well actually I HAVE but I decided to scrap it and start over. Before I get too far into it again I want to make my composition as perfect as possible.

I understand what you mean now, and I see how my image might be too complex for the public my story is directed towards. Didn't realized that before... If I decide to go ahead and illustrate the rest of the story I will have to revisit this image and try to find a clearer/simpler way to convey the story.
