I'm building my list for submissions at the moment and finding conflicting information on how to submit to Highlights and Cricket Magazine. Has anyone submitted illustration work electronically to either one and received a reply?

@mag Haha yeah it's so difficult to decide what to include in the site, I just looked at sites of people I like and took bits and pieces from each that I thought worked to make something for myself! Same, if I find any other alternative mailing sites that would be suitable I'll be sure to let you know 😃

Yes i agree with everything @ThisKateCreates @NessIllustration have said.

One thing I learned from talking to someone that knows a lot about art history and art concepts and illustration and storytelling etc. is that art is used as a form of communication and because of this, if you are choosing to deliberately make subtle expressions rather than exaggerating ones, it’s a good idea to ask yourself “why am i choosing to do this and will it communicate what I’m trying to communicate effectively? Or will someone have to struggle to figure out what I’m trying to communicate?” Especially when it comes to images that tell a story, is it telling the story effectively or not? If You are using subtle expeessions to convey a feeling, maybe ask people who dont know what you’re intended emotion is “hey what do you think this character is feeling by looking at their expression?” And if it’s difficult to guess, or they guess something else, maybe thats not an effective way to communicate that emotion. If you dont want to change the expression, what other visual elements can you use instead that will add to the story? The great thing about picture books and comics though is they are accompanied by text which makes it easier. So you can use fun text elements. But if you have art that can speak for itself it’s even better.

Yep, you’re all good. I can see it too. That’s how you do it, click the reply button. As long as it’s not the reply button on a comment then it will be in the main thread. It would still show up, mind you, but it would have someone’s name at the beginning as if your were commenting on their comment. 🤪

I think there are some really valuable responses in this thread. What i've been told is that you ultimately want to interpret your point of view of life and then communicate it through your art. I think drawing from life will help you achieve this and really help you make art that is unique to you. That being said, I believe drawing from reference is necessary to make your images believable. Jake and Will explain this very well in their Creative Environment Design class.

      Hi everyone!

I just launch a new project called Totem world in which I inspired myself on someone I admire to create a Totem, a representation of what her/his spirit animal could be.

My goal is of course exposure and eventually jobs contracts.

What are your thoughts on this project? What can I improve?

      Thanks!

@NessIllustration - I can't thank you enough for your very thoughtful response to my questions. Imagining a grid is really helpful in understanding and further cleared confusion. By the way, I've been following your feedback on other posts, as well as your work, and really admire both.

      Thank you!!

      That is very understandable.
Yes, of course, a literary agent is working on behalf of the publisher and would require exclusivity for a literary project.

For a manuscript, I am much more likely to work with a literary agent to get my book picked up by a publisher.
It can imagine that it would increase the likely hood of being published by that same publisher or being published by other publishers for similar projects.

In your experience, are you published by the same publisher repeatedly or have you worked with multiple publishers?
