@xin-li Yeah, it makes sense. I hadn't really thought of the emotional impact, but it's good to hear going forward. My main focus was mostly on the Raven, that's where most of that decision fell upon after observing Ravens and seeing how they move in the real world. I noticed that the first posture wasn't something they did in real life. So, I pulled back. It's probably a matter of finding that middle ground between reality and exaggeration. Something I'll focus on in Raven #4. I'll also play with the tilt a little more to experiment. As soon as I figure out how to do that. LOL! Would love to hear from others. Feedback is always helpful.

I did this one for my wife as well. I usually do her a picture for Valentine's day.

This is a super cute concept! I think it would definitely help to know the goals/parameters of the assignment to get a better idea of what may need critiquing.
At first glance, I feel like it's heavily weighted at the top of the canvas, but there's extra blank space at the bottom that's making it feel unbalanced. I'm attaching an example of what it would look like cropped in a little closer, with some of the characters flowing off-canvas as one possible solution to the balance problem (though this creates a tangent at the point highlighted in red that would need to be fixed if you do crop). You could also see what it looks like just scooting the scene down a little if you want to keep more negative space around them.

The only other thing that stands out to me is the planet in the back, which feels like an awkward size, and a little lonely there. Maybe play with resizing it either larger or smaller and/or adding a second moon, planet, ship, or satellite. Alternatively, maybe set it inside an alien home or ship instead of in the open air of a planet?

Thats really cool. I am also learning to write and do similar studies of the word element in the book. I like the idea of taking all the photos and making one page out of them. Takes a bit more time, but a good tool to learn from.

Theres a few things you can do to connect the lamp and table. I think the shape language can he improved.

The lamp is nice and tall and the table/desk looks small comparatively, you can extend the legs more. Also the base of the lamp and the lamp shade are nice solid bold shapes. Using the same mind of thicker shapes in the table legs might help too. Like a bigger cube for the feets. Or a taller cylinder for the center part of the legs. Relate the shapes of each prop to your main prop (i.e. the lamp).

Hi! I’m pretty new to these forums but maybe I can help. I did a very quick paint over to show you some little things that could improve the painting. I hope you don’t mind. The first thing I noticed was that your monster guy was too close to the edge of the canvas and too dark, so I moved him a little closer to the center and highlighted the fur to make him pop and match the lighting on the staff. The next thing I noticed was how the slant of the mountain peeks were forcing the eye up out of the picture. Try to think about using all the lines in your illustration to pull the eyes back to the focal point. I also darkened the nearer cliff face a little bit. The next thing I noticed was you have shadows going in opposite directions. The tree in the foreground is lit from the left, but the other trees seem to be lit from the right, so I fixed the shadows. There are two other little things that I didn’t change but thought I should point out to you, first I would stay away from those stamp brushes for leaves and other highly rendered textures when you are using a more painterly style. The other thing is the hut on the edge of the canvas, I would either remove it or bring it in further. You don’t want important details so close to the edge. I hope this critique has helped you. The concept is fun and I love the colors you chose. I would love to know the story of this guy!

@TessaW Thank you! Yes, hands are often tough for me. I'll find some creative references and rework the poses. The suggestion to add details to the rocket and jeans is helpful. I see now that I did so in some features but didn't add much to those areas. Thanks again!

For some reason my eyes keep getting drawn to the brown bunny with the pointy ears...they sort of point me to the upper left and it is also the only animal where we don't see the face and the thought distracted me from what was going on to the right. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Good idea, I'll make some copies and try doing a few value studies, I haven't thought about light source yet but that's would be a good thing to figure out next. I'm wondering about my dancers' feet in the bottom left...I cut them off...I may need to redraw with them totally in the frame or cut them off more but then I'm afraid it won't look like they're in motion...I'd like to have space for text as well. I need to do a couple more thumbnails I think.
