I just finished watching this class, and I have to say, it is the best I have watched on SVS so far (and every class I have watched was excellent!) I just want to thanks @Lee-White for creating it, I will certainly use these techniques for my new book project! And if someone hasn't watched it yet... JUST GO WATCH IT NOW!!! 😉

I've broken the story down for this now and I need to do a rough storyboard of the scenes I guess. I'm not feeling great about this project, its bigger than I thought, but I will use it as a learning experience.

@evilrobot I am working on a book project as well. Actually it is a story my son wrote in school. I broke it down by pages and sent it to a friend who is an advanced placement english teacher and asked for him to proof/edit it. He came back with some great suggestions that i was able to work out with my son. With that being said if you know someone that you can hit up with help, use their resources.

@BradAYoo Thanks for the feed back! I'll give pg 14 another look-e-loo. I wanted to emphasize the removal of her coat in this section. As a sort of shedding of winter and climbing to the sun. (will be able to see better with color) Maybe I could have the coat removed in the foreground and see her in the distance climbing the cliff... Puts on thinking cap

Focusing on making Caleb look younger would be a large priority for me. I like 11 best but feel that design #4 would also work well. Facial hair really ages the character so I'd avoid it for the teen.

I feel that 7, 10, and 11 are my favorite for Stephen's dad with 7 and 11 being the favorite (10 looks a bit sneaky/twisted). All three of those give off a more scholarly vibe due, in part, to the line angles used as well as the grooming and dress for the character.

The reworked character for Caleb speaks much better to his age and is more crisply rendered. The redone page uses the text boxes better (a bit more rounded and organic). The colors, values, and line art of the redone page make it much easier to follow the action in the page and tell the story more effectively. Great job so far. 🙂

@Katrina-Fowler These are wonderful! The lower illustration on page 12 doesn't quite read right to me though. I thought the boy was jumping down instead of up. Perhaps if the boy jumped from lower left, to center, to upper right? (Because the top boy is to the left, I started there and read down.) But I love the illustration of the girl looking up. Great!

@NoWayMe Thanks so much for the advice about text on images, that's really helpful and it makes sense to have a selection including text. I read an article recently by a book designer who said she couldn't stand it when illustrators put sloppy typography on their images, so it put me off including text. Great idea to have mixture of with and without in my portfolio.

Here's my new drawing. I'm not sure how well it works as an image for a shop banner--somehow i feel it's too cool toned for that, or maybe not graphic enough. I'm not very graphically oriented, anyway. I'll be completely redoing the lettering.Hippsie Gypsy anthemsweet bright.jpg

So the overall idea is (hopefully) self explanatory; a kid stuck between right and wrong. Aside from potentially switching what side the actual words are on (it feels a little counterintuitive to have wrong come first), I would love to specifically know the following: 1.) whether or not the letters I've painted are even legible 2.) if they are legible, do the values make it easily legible, or do they need to be adjusted

I´m doing this workbook right now, But i´m a little lost at the first exercise. I´m having difficulties to understand what to do, and how can I do this. I know that Will previously has explained this at the video, but I only understood the third step, which is creating your own.

So, about page 1, Can anyone help me and explain what´s the difference between the first and the second step?
And, how can I do the third one? i´m really finding it really difficult.

Had a chance to work on this piece a bit more and here it is! Not sure if I'm done yet but I'm looking to possibly expand on the cake a bit more (and possibly the center character). Thoughts? 🙂

Also, I'm working on switching gears as an artist by being a painter in Photoshop. My style is usually flat by default as I start out by sketching then detouring to Illustrator to do lines, then switching back to Photoshop to slap on shapes and etc. But at the end, everything seems too flat and cold, unlike actual paintings. This is the one critique that I have of myself at the moment that I'm trying to answer to. In addition, I feel like I have this intermediate skillset as when I see all of these other more seasoned painters around here and throughout the internet, I'm blown away but inspired.

Anyways, ramblings aside, here's my stuff and thanks for reading!

@KelvinBurnett3 you can do whatever you want 🙂 Whatever you need to practice. For me its mainly color practice and recognizing values from colors. Also working straight with paint without underdrawing. Well I dont really know what I will take from this, i shall see 🙂
