@AbbeyK I think they mean just enough to understand see how the tones in the image will work. If you have regular soft lighting it's probably not necessary to include it in your thumbnail. But if you have lighting that plays an important role (spotlight, dramatic lighting, etc) and it changes everything about the tones of your image, then it's necessary to test it out at this stage.

Thank you so much for your feedback, everybody! I really like most of them as ideas, though I have to admit that 12 doesn't really say isolation to me and 7 and 9 have some silhouette problems. Right now I'm drawing out 4, with 5 and 11 in my back pocket if I don't like how it comes out. Sometimes you just have to draw something out before knowing if it's going to work!

One thing that I learned through this process is that although "solitude" (time alone to concentrate) can be positive, "isolation" (lack of connection) has a negative connotation for me. Spending the last two months without seeing another face up close just hammered that in even more. So the "lone wolf" for me is really a character who is discovering his need for others, hopefully with a bit of humor. And 4 is the darkest of the thumbnails, so I really hope I can get the humor across in that one!

Great thumbnails! I agree with @LauraA that the 1st thumbnail most addresses the "isolation" prompt. I really love the 2nd thumbnail, though, with that diagonal composition. You could probably use it for something else! ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck!

@Coreyartus Thank you so much! Your post is super encouraging, I'm really glad you liked it and that it reads as it does for you. Making art can really put you in a weird place sometimes where you can't see things as other people do anymore, so I really appreciate the feedback here.

I hadn't thought of doing an illustrated version of the play to be honest, but it might be a fun idea!

As for text, yes, I would like to put at least a title on, but haven't quite worked my way around to that piece yet.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave the feedback!

While awaiting Discord Group for CED -took a digital stab at the first workbook exercise. However Photoshop is tad bothering me and won't allow my hard brush to remain off on Transfer Pen Pressure, i.e reason for my black mark making is not solid.

Anyways looking SUPER forward to CED Group.

      Hi!
I am in love with the designs of your mushroom people - I think the idea of putting their face at the very base of the shroom with these big floppy heads/foreheads is adorable and funny and something I haven't seen before.
My critique is in a place where I'm just starting to learn from - but it looks like with your comp that you could benefit from finding the big shapes forms and doing value on those. Your woman has a lot of different values in her which makes it hard for her to stand out - but maybe if her value and the cat and the mushroom people can all be of a lighter value, where the whole middle ground is the darkness of that grass. This would allow her to pop out more and be the true focus.

Great thumbnailing! When you narrow it down to the one you want to do, I'd encourage you to do thumbnails with a bunch of value variations.

I pictured an art nouveau style poster from your sketch!

Since its a dancing event, I think you could add more gesture into the people's poses. Right now its a little hard to tell its swing dancing because their poses are a bit stiff. Maybe try poses that show off more of that swing energy (example, one of her arms may be up in the air, head thrown back a bit, or her legs swing up, etc.) I would google some swing dancing pictures as reference for your poses. .
If you dont want to change the people then maybe use more curvy wild vines to give the piece some movement. Good luck!

@evilrobot Thanks for your feedback! Since I've already started on the second piece in pencil I'll work on what I can change (mostly the wolf at this point) and keep the suggestions in mind for future pieces. I initially choose to have the composition centered because I wanted to emphasize the starting and ending point for this character and wasn't sure another composition would highlight the differences as well as a centered comp. In the future I'll try making it less balanced and more dynamic.

I agree the first image is still super rough. I think I'll see about adding kids in the alley way to take up some of the space and move the main character as well. There does seem to be a lot of dead space in the first image. I didn't notice it before. I'll have to see what I can do to fix the composition and the blank space.

@evilrobot Thanks for bring that up. I was unsure too, if the conveyor belt is a tool or not, as it is described in the text?
In the first one she is holding the box and the belt with the bottles are flying out. Maybe if she was reaching in and yanking it out. Unsure if that would be confusing or not?
      Thanks for your input.

I vote 5 and 8, leaning more towards 8 for adventure appeal and being curious where he is going. Lee's thumbnails are fantastic, loved seeing the progression and the other artist's samples.
